Union Minister of State Shobha Karandlaje has responded firmly to comments made by Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge concerning the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Karandlaje stated that the RSS is like a “big tree” that is beyond the reach of any criticism or damage.
Addressing reporters, Karandlaje highlighted the historical context of the Congress party’s stance towards the RSS, noting that the organization was banned shortly after India’s independence and again in 1975 by Indira Gandhi, yet it continued to thrive. She expressed that the current government is unfazed by mere route marches, emphasizing the widespread love and respect the RSS commands.
Priyank Kharge’s Stance
Earlier, Priyank Kharge had justified his call for action against government officials attending RSS events. He pointed to the Karnataka State Civil Service (Conduct) Rules, 2021, which mandate political neutrality for civil servants, stating that participation in or association with politically inclined organizations is prohibited.
Kharge mentioned that his department had issued show-cause notices to employees who participated in the RSS’ centenary celebrations and that suspension would follow. He clarified that while individuals are free to follow their ideologies, they must adhere to the rules governing state government employees.
Rule 5(1) of the Karnataka State Civil Service (Conduct) Rules, 2021, clearly states that government servants should not be associated with any political party or organization involved in politics.
Karandlaje’s Rebuttal
Karandlaje further asserted that actions taken by individuals like Priyank Kharge are inconsequential to the RSS. She affirmed her support for the organization, questioning what more could be done to impact it, even jokingly asking if she and others supporting the RSS would be jailed.
