Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently declared that India must adopt an uncompromising, “ruthless” approach against all fugitives—including economic offenders, cyber criminals, and those involved in terrorist activities—to ensure they are swiftly brought to justice within the Indian legal system.
Speaking at a CBI-organized conference on ‘Extradition of Fugitives – Challenges and Strategies,’ Mr. Shah underscored the necessity of a zero-tolerance policy. This applies not only to corruption, crime, and terrorism within the country but also extends emphatically to criminals orchestrating their illicit activities from foreign soil.
He stressed the importance of creating robust mechanisms to ensure all such fugitives are brought under the rule of law, regardless of where they are hiding.
“Whether these individuals are financial fraudsters, cyber attackers, terror operatives, or members of organized crime syndicates, a relentless strategy must be employed to drag every fugitive before the Indian courts. The moment for this decisive action is now,” he asserted.
The Home Minister confidently stated that the Narendra Modi government has implemented comprehensive and foolproof measures, making it impossible for any offender to evade legal consequences.
He added that “under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, a stronger India is committed to not just securing its borders, but also to significantly bolstering the rule of law across the nation.”
Mr. Shah emphasized that while criminals and their tactics might evolve rapidly, the hand of justice must always be swifter and more effective.
Furthermore, he urged all States to establish at least one prison facility that meets international standards. This measure aims to counteract arguments made by fugitives in foreign courts, where they often cite substandard jail conditions as a reason to resist extradition.
