In an exciting development for global sports, the Executive Board (EB) of Commonwealth Sport has formally put forward Amdavad, the local name for Ahmedabad in Gujarat, India, as the prospective host city for the highly anticipated 2030 Centenary Commonwealth Games.
The recommendation follows a thorough evaluation process conducted by the Commonwealth Sport Evaluation Committee, which meticulously assessed proposals from various candidate cities. Both Amdavad and Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, had presented their bids to host this prestigious event. After careful consideration against a comprehensive set of criteria, Amdavad emerged as the preferred choice.
This pivotal recommendation will now be presented for final approval at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly, scheduled to take place in Glasgow on November 26. The announcement marks a significant step for the city and the Commonwealth Games movement.
Dr. Donald Rukare, interim president of Commonwealth Sport, enthusiastically highlighted the importance of this moment, describing it as “a significant milestone for the Movement as we look to our Centenary Games.”
P.T. Usha, president of both the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and Commonwealth Games Association India (CGAI), emphasized the broader impact of such an event. She stated that hosting the Games would not only “showcase India’s world-class sporting and event capabilities” but also contribute meaningfully to the nation’s ambitious “Viksit Bharat 2047” vision.
