Guwahati, Assam: The Special Director General of Police, Munna Prasad Gupta, announced that three more members of the Assamese community residing in Singapore, present with singer Zubeen Garg during his last moments, appeared before the SIT on Wednesday. The SIT is diligently probing the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.
Sushmita Goswami, Pratim Bhuyan, and Debojyoti Hazarika were the individuals who reported to the CID office and are currently undergoing interrogation. Gupta informed reporters that out of the eleven people who had been summoned, ten have now presented themselves to the SIT.
The police are awaiting the arrival of Wajed Ahmed, the only individual yet to appear. Ahmed, a Singaporean citizen, has communicated his intention to cooperate and is expected soon. Gupta clarified that all other individuals who have come forward are Indian citizens.
Earlier, Rupkamal Kalita was the first to appear before the SIT on October 7, following the initial deadline. Fresh summons were subsequently issued to the others.
Addressing concerns about a purported post-mortem report that circulated widely on social media, Gupta stated emphatically that it was “not authentic” and deemed it “fake” due to the absence of a doctor’s signature. He confirmed that the official report received by the police bears the necessary signatures.
The police intend to investigate the source of the fake post-mortem report to determine if its release was a deliberate attempt to mislead the public or divert attention from the ongoing investigation. Gupta urged the public to refrain from sharing any false or misleading information on social media, warning that such actions constitute a crime and will be met with legal action.
In a positive turn of events, Singaporean authorities have contacted the Indian High Commission via email to seek details regarding the Assam police officials and their investigation agenda concerning Zubeen Garg’s death. Gupta expressed optimism about this development, stating that a reply has already been sent.
Furthermore, Singapore has received a request to invoke the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty, a crucial step that Gupta hopes will soon lead to the green signal for Assam police officials to travel to Singapore to further the investigation.
The investigation is reportedly progressing well within the state. Zubeen Garg, a beloved cultural icon of Assam, passed away in Singapore on September 19 while swimming in the sea.
