In a candid statement, ace pacer Mohammed Shami, returning to the Bengal squad for the Ranji Trophy season opener against Uttarakhand at the Eden Gardens this Wednesday, voiced his readiness for one-day cricket. Shami, who was notably absent from India’s squad for the upcoming Australia tour, emphasized that his fitness is not a concern and it’s not his role to keep the national selectors informed.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Shami stated that the matter of his selection is beyond his direct control. “If there were any fitness concerns, I wouldn’t be here playing,” he clarified. “If I’m capable of playing four-day matches, then I’m certainly capable of playing 50-over matches.”
Taking Ownership of His Preparation
Addressing chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s reported comment during the Australia tour announcement—where Agarkar mentioned having no updates on Shami’s fitness—the experienced fast bowler responded firmly. “My responsibility is to attend the National Cricket Academy (NCA), play matches, and focus on my preparation. That’s my job. It’s not my responsibility to ensure selectors receive updates on my status; that’s up to them.”
Shami highlighted his consistent participation in various tournaments, including the Champions Trophy, IPL, and Duleep Trophy, along with regular practice. “If an opportunity to play arises, I will seize it. I have no injury worries; everything is perfectly fine,” he assured.
Looking ahead to the Ranji Trophy match, Shami expressed his excitement about sharing the new ball with fellow international pacer Akash Deep. “Akash reminded me today that we haven’t had the chance to bowl together yet. We bring a wealth of experience to the table. With a strong bowling attack featuring Akash, Mukesh (Kumar), Suraj (Jaiswal), and (Mohammed) Kaif, I’m optimistic this unit will propel Bengal to success,” Shami concluded.
