The North Tripura district administration has announced a major water conservation initiative, the ‘Uttar Jal Sanchay Yatra,’ which aims to construct 50,000 soak pits within a two-day period in November. This widespread drive is scheduled to take place on November 3rd and 4th.
Soak pits, described as underground chambers that allow water to gradually seep into the soil, play a crucial role in replenishing groundwater, mitigating flood risks, and improving agricultural conditions.
Chandni Chandran, the District Magistrate of North Tripura, shared the administration’s enthusiasm for this large-scale mission, emphasizing the goal of making water conservation a people’s movement. She highlighted the significant impact these seemingly simple structures can have on the environment.
To encourage participation, a demonstration of soak pit construction was held, and the process has been shared on social media. The administration is calling upon all citizens to join hands in this vital campaign, transforming it into a historic success.
This initiative aligns with the national objective of “catch the rain where it falls” and demonstrates a commitment to community-driven environmental action. The district administration is collaborating with various government bodies and organizations, including the Swachh Bharat Mission, MyGov Tripura, the RD Department, and TRLM, to ensure the campaign’s effective implementation. Local panchayats, schools, Self-Help Groups, and clubs are also being involved to maximize the reach and impact across the district. Awareness campaigns will be conducted in every village and ward to ensure widespread participation.
