Senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan has had his security cover reinstated subsequent to his release from Sitapur jail on September 23rd.
A senior police officer confirmed the restoration of his security, although the specific level of protection is yet to be clarified. Khan, who was previously a Y-category protectee, had his security measures returned to their previous status after being granted bail. The Y security cover typically includes around 8 personnel for those assessed with a moderate security risk, with a slightly higher tier (Y+) adding a couple more.
Currently, Khan is reportedly guarded by 5 constables and 3 gunners, indicating a Y-level security detail.
Khan, a founding member of the Samajwadi Party, was released on bail after serving 23 months. Following his release, he received a warm welcome in Rampur and expressed gratitude to those who had prayed for him. He also addressed speculations about joining another political party, dismissing them with a statement for his well-wishers to question the sources of such claims.
The restoration of security comes after the Allahabad High Court granted him bail in a land encroachment case in Rampur district, a development that followed his release after facing multiple charges since 2017.
