New Delhi: Afghanistan prefers to resolve border clashes with Pakistan through dialogue but will resort to “other means” if peaceful efforts do not succeed, Taliban foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi announced on Sunday. His remarks came after recent clashes resulted in significant casualties among both Afghan and Pakistani troops.
Muttaqi addressed the press in New Delhi, having canceled a planned visit to the Taj Mahal to hold the conference. He firmly rejected Pakistan’s allegations of Afghanistan harboring the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), asserting that the Afghan people are unified against any form of “external interference.” The Durand Line, the contentious border established in 1893 and not recognized by Afghanistan, has been the scene of recent intense fighting.
“The policy of the Islamic Emirate is to resolve all problems through discussions and understanding. We want to have zero tension, and if they [Pakistan] don’t want that, then Afghanistan has other means,” Muttaqi stated, emphasizing that while the situation is currently under control, Afghanistan will not tolerate violations of its sovereignty.
He acknowledged that many in Pakistan, including government officials and the public, favor good relations with Afghanistan, but pointed to “specific elements” attempting to destabilize the situation. Muttaqi also highlighted Afghanistan’s historical resilience, referencing past conflicts with the Soviet Union and NATO forces, and asserting the country’s ability to defend itself.
Regarding accusations of TTP bases within Afghanistan, Muttaqi questioned Pakistan’s capacity to secure its own borders, given its superior military and intelligence resources. “Why can’t they themselves control this area?” he asked. Muttaqi reiterated Afghanistan’s commitment to peaceful resolutions and maintaining good relations with all countries, while also affirming its capability to protect its territory and airspace.
