The Danish Siddiqui Foundation has reached out to the Indian government with a plea for justice regarding the killing of Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Danish Siddiqui. The foundation believes that the current visit of Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, presents a significant chance for India to address this matter diplomatically.
In a statement shared on LinkedIn, the Foundation emphasized the importance of pursuing justice for Danish Siddiqui, an Indian journalist who was captured, tortured, and tragically killed in Afghanistan in 2021 while on assignment. They are seeking India’s support in pursuing accountability through international channels, specifically the International Criminal Court and the United Nations Human Rights Council.
The foundation also highlighted that the Taliban minister’s visit offers an opportunity to remind the Taliban of their responsibilities under international humanitarian law and to encourage their cooperation with any independent investigations into Siddiqui’s death.
Danish Siddiqui, working for Reuters, was killed in July 2021 in Spin Boldak, Afghanistan, while covering a conflict. He was posthumously awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 2022 for his impactful coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic in India.
Siddiqui’s family had previously filed a complaint with the International Criminal Court against several high-ranking Taliban officials, including Hassan Akhund, Abdul Ghani Baradar, Muhammad Yaqoob Mujahid, Gul Agha Sherzai, and Zabiullah Mujahid, along with other perpetrators. Reports suggest Siddiqui was captured, tortured, and killed after being injured during an attack, with disturbing accounts of his body being mutilated.
