West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed shock and outrage on Sunday over the alleged gang rape of a medical student in Durgapur, emphasizing her government’s unwavering stance against such heinous incidents.
Following the arrest of three individuals in connection with the case, Banerjee stated that the police are actively pursuing others involved. She firmly declared, “No one will be spared.” The Chief Minister also directed private educational institutions to enhance security measures both within their campuses and in the surrounding areas.
The victim, a second-year MBBS student from Odisha, was reportedly attacked on Friday night near the private medical college in Durgapur. Police have confirmed that she is receiving medical treatment and has provided her statement to the authorities.
According to the victim’s mother, she was lured outside the campus by a friend. While they were together, three individuals began to follow them. Her friend subsequently fled, leaving her alone. The assailants then allegedly took the student to a nearby forest, where two more people joined them. The attackers stole her mobile phone and threatened to kill her if she raised an alarm.
The victim’s father shared that his daughter is currently bedridden and unable to walk, receiving medical care. Expressing concerns for her safety, he appealed to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to permit his daughter’s transfer to Odisha, believing it would be a safer environment for her. He added that while the state authorities have been very supportive and are monitoring her health, he urgently requests permission to move her for her well-being.
