The West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC) announced on Friday, October 10, 2025, the establishment of a special committee. This body is specifically tasked with the vital responsibility of protecting the voting rights and citizenship of individuals across the state, especially as a significant Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls looms.
Prosenjit Bose, who chairs the newly formed committee, explained that this “Special Committee to Safeguard the Right to Vote & Citizenship of the People of West Bengal” will play a crucial role in managing the party’s efforts concerning the electoral roll revision. It will also address broader citizenship issues, including those related to the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
Furthermore, a Congress delegation is expected to engage with state election officials soon, advocating for essential changes to the SIR process, Mr. Bose informed on Saturday. This move aligns with the Congress’s prior call for an all-party meeting at the state level before the SIR begins in West Bengal.
“Our primary goal is to prevent the unfair removal of legitimate voters and the fraudulent inclusion of invalid voters during the SIR process in West Bengal,” Mr. Bose stated. “We urge all eligible voters in West Bengal, regardless of their political affiliation, to reach out to us without hesitation for any concerns or assistance needed regarding the electoral roll revision.”
This development follows the recent conclusion of the SIR in Bihar, which resulted in a final electoral roll of approximately 7.42 crore voters. Before this revision, Bihar’s voter count stood at 7.89 crore as of June 24, 2025.
