Mahayuti Government Accelerates Bal Thackeray’s Vision: Housing for Every Mumbaikar

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde recently affirmed the Mahayuti government’s unwavering commitment to realizing late Bal Thackeray’s profound vision: ensuring every Mumbaikar, particularly the poor and working class, has a place to call home.

This significant goal is being brought to life through extensive housing projects championed by key agencies such as the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Limited (CIDCO), the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), and the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).

Speaking at a momentous MHADA housing lottery event in Thane, Mr. Shinde oversaw the allocation of 5,354 new homes and 77 plots via a fully computerized, transparent draw. He hailed the occasion as a ‘festival of fulfillment’ for countless families.

Shinde highlighted that the impartiality of the lottery system has successfully restored public confidence in MHADA. He emphasized, “A house is more than just four walls; it’s the bedrock of security, self-respect, and joy for every family. Balasaheb Thackeray always harbored the dream that every Mumbaikar, especially those from humble backgrounds, should own a home. That cherished dream is now visibly materializing.”

He further elaborated, “Balasaheb’s dream transcended politics; it was deeply emotional, centered on bestowing dignity upon every Mumbaikar. That very dream is transforming into reality.”

According to Mr. Shinde, MHADA has already constructed over nine lakh homes statewide, with fierce competition—35 to 40 applicants for each flat—underscoring the public’s immense trust in the authority. He assured attendees of the lottery system’s complete transparency, free from any political interference or favoritism.

“We are dedicated to redeveloping older MHADA and SRA colonies, alongside building millions of affordable homes across Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan, Dombivli, Mira-Bhayandar, and other crucial parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Our objective is to provide true ‘homes,’ not just structures, thereby advancing Balasaheb’s enduring vision,” the Deputy CM stated.

The government is also engaging in joint ventures with CIDCO, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), and the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) to accelerate redevelopment efforts. These collaborations aim to deliver an additional 30 to 35 lakh new homes within the next five years, backed by an estimated investment of ₹50 lakh crore.
