India has announced the appointment of senior diplomat Gourangalal Das as its new Ambassador to South Korea. This strategic move was confirmed on Wednesday, September 16, 2025.
A distinguished officer from the 1999 batch of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Mr. Das currently holds a critical position, leading the East Asia division at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) headquarters in New Delhi.
In his capacity at the MEA, Mr. Das played an instrumental role in the intricate negotiations between India and China. His expertise was crucial in the efforts to rebuild diplomatic ties that had suffered immense strain following the prolonged four-year border standoff in eastern Ladakh.
The Ministry of External Affairs issued a brief statement confirming his new assignment, indicating that Mr. Das, who is currently a Joint Secretary, is expected to take up his ambassadorial duties in the Republic of Korea without delay.
