Kerala is bracing for an onslaught of heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next two days, a situation triggered by active weather systems developing in both the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. Residents across the state are advised to stay alert as intense downpours are expected.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributes this weather phenomenon to two primary factors: an upper-air cyclonic circulation hovering over the south coastal Andhra Pradesh region and another similar circulation situated over the southeast Arabian Sea, adjacent to the north Kerala coast. These systems are converging to bring significant precipitation.
Consequently, the IMD has issued an ‘Orange Alert’ for Saturday, October 11, 2025, specifically for the districts of Idukki, Kannur, and Kasaragod, indicating a forecast of very heavy rainfall. Additionally, a ‘Yellow Alert’ is in place for Pathanamthitta, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad, where heavy rainfall is anticipated within the next 24 hours. Looking ahead to Sunday, October 12, 2025, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, and Wayanad will remain under a ‘Yellow Alert’.
The impact of these weather patterns has already been felt. Over the past 24 hours, ending at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, several areas reported substantial rainfall. Venkurinji in Pathanamthitta district recorded the highest with 9 cm, followed by Peechi in Thrissur with 8 cm. Karipur in Malappuram, Enamakkal in Thrissur, and Peringome in Kannur each received 7 cm of rain, highlighting the intensity of the recent showers.
