With an intense Northeast monsoon potentially on the horizon, Chennai Mayor Priya Rajan recently confirmed that additional measures are being actively implemented in the city’s low-lying areas. These efforts are a direct response to requests from local councillors, aiming to bolster urban resilience ahead of the anticipated heavy rainfall.
Mayor Rajan addressed reporters, stating, “Information suggests that this year’s Northeast monsoon could bring a high volume of rainfall. However, the exact course of nature remains unpredictable.” She emphasized that critical stormwater drain projects are progressing throughout the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) limits. Furthermore, 100-horsepower motor pumps are being strategically deployed to manage water accumulation in vulnerable, low-lying zones.
In other news, Mayor Rajan also took part in a significant ceremony for a new indoor badminton stadium, slated for construction at Millennium Park in Anna Nagar West Extension. This project, valued at ₹93 lakh, is being funded through the Mayor’s Development Fund. Immediately following, she inaugurated the new ‘EmpowHer’ women’s gym within the same park, a modern facility completed at a cost of ₹25 lakh under the GCC’s Capital Fund. Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments P.K. Sekarbabu, along with various officials and elected representatives, were present at these events.
