Former minister K.S. Eshwarappa has directly challenged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, calling for a clear statement on his government’s position regarding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Kuruba community. Eshwarappa also pressed the State Government to promptly address the Central Government’s inquiries on this significant matter.
Speaking at a press conference in Shivamogga on Friday, October 10, 2025, Mr. Eshwarappa recounted that the previous BJP government, led by Basavaraj Bommai, had initially decided to recommend ST status for the Kurubas. This move followed extensive protests and a significant ‘padayatra’ (long march) organized by caste leaders, including Niranjanandapuri Swamy.
Eshwarappa highlighted CM Siddaramaiah’s recent acknowledgement of his own role in advocating for the Kuruba ST tag during a Valmiki Jayanti celebration. “I readily admit my part in organizing the 350-kilometer ‘padayatra’ in 2021, which aimed to pressure the government,” he stated. He added that while the Bommai cabinet made the initial decision, the subsequent Congress government also forwarded the recommendation to the Centre.
The recommendation to the Centre was based on a detailed ethnographic study of the Kuruba caste. Eshwarappa noted, “The Centre is now reportedly seeking further clarifications from the State Government on this recommendation, and it is imperative that the state government provides a timely response.”
He further emphasized a broader principle, asserting that the right to demand ST status is not exclusive to Kurubas but extends to all communities that genuinely deserve it. Eshwarappa concluded by stating, “When new castes are included under the ST category, the reservation quantum must be adjusted to reflect the increased population, ensuring fairness for all.”
