Tragedy struck Chandigarh on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, as a senior Haryana police officer, Y. Puran Kumar, was discovered deceased at his residence with a gunshot wound. Authorities are investigating the incident and suspect it to be a case of suicide.
Kumar, a distinguished officer from the 2001 batch, held the position of Inspector General at the Police Training Centre (PTC) in Sunaria, Rohtak.
At the time of the discovery, his wife, Amneet P. Kumar, an IAS officer serving as Commissioner and Secretary of the Department of Foreign Cooperation for the Haryana government, was abroad in Japan with a delegation led by Chief Minister Nayab Saini.
Police were dispatched to the Kumars’ upscale Sector 11 home around 1:30 p.m. after receiving a report. Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Police Kanwardeep Kaur confirmed to reporters, “The SHO, Sector 11, and his team inspected the scene. A reported suicide had taken place… The body was identified as that of Y Puran Kumar, IPS officer.”
When questioned about the presence of a suicide note, SSP Kaur stated, “A team of the CFSL (Central Forensic Science Laboratory) is inspecting the spot, and investigations are ongoing.” She added that individuals present in the house at the time of the incident are currently being interviewed.
Before his recent transfer to IG, PTC, Sunaria, Kumar served as the Inspector General for the Rohtak Range.
