Starting September 17, a remarkable collection of over 1,300 gifts received by Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be open for bids in an online e-auction. This diverse assortment includes a beautiful Tanjore painting depicting Ram Durbar, an elegant metallic statue of Nataraja, and inspiring sports memorabilia generously donated by India’s celebrated para-athletes.
During the launch of the 7th Prime Minister’s Mementoes E-Auction, Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat highlighted the variety of items available. Bidders will find an array of paintings, exquisite artifacts, detailed sculptures, idols of gods and goddesses, and various sports-related items. The entire collection of more than 1,300 gifts is set to be auctioned online, commencing this Wednesday.
Continuing a tradition from previous years, all funds generated from this e-auction will be dedicated to the ‘Namami Gange’ Project. This flagship initiative by the Government of India is crucial for the revitalization, preservation, and protection of the sacred Ganga river and its delicate ecosystem.
The first such auction of the Prime Minister’s gifts took place in January 2019. Since then, numerous unique items presented to the PM have been successfully auctioned, collectively raising over ₹50 crore.
The gifts showcase the rich cultural tapestry of India, featuring traditional artworks, intricate paintings, sculptures, various handicrafts, and indigenous tribal artifacts. The collection also includes ceremonial gifts symbolizing honor and respect. Notable pieces include a meticulously embroidered Pashmina shawl from Jammu and Kashmir, the aforementioned Tanjore painting of Ram Durbar, a striking metallic Nataraja statue, vibrant Rogan Art from Gujarat illustrating the Tree of Life, and a finely handwoven Naga shawl, as stated by the Union Culture Ministry.
A Special Feature
A particularly moving aspect of this year’s auction is the inclusion of sports memorabilia contributed by India’s para-athletes who competed in the Paris Paralympics 2024. These cherished items stand as powerful symbols of their incredible resilience, exceptional excellence, and the enduring spirit of Indian sportsmanship.
Before the bidding begins, all items are proudly displayed at the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi, offering visitors a chance to view them in person before placing their online bids.
