Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) is set to embark on a new chapter under the leadership of IAS Sarfaraz Ahmad, a highly accomplished officer from the 2009 batch. The Telangana government officially announced his appointment as the new Managing Director on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, granting him Full Additional Charge (FAC) of this crucial role. He takes over from N.V.S. Reddy, IRAS, who was serving as the MD.
Mr. Ahmad brings a strong academic foundation to the role, holding a Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) in Aerospace Engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur.
His extensive experience in public administration includes significant roles such as Metropolitan Commissioner of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), Managing Director of Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited, and Project Director of the Outer Ring Road. Prior to these responsibilities, he served as the Municipal Commissioner of Warangal, District Collector of Karimnagar, Commissioner of Prohibition & Excise, and Joint Chief Electoral Officer, demonstrating a versatile and impactful career in various sectors of governance.

Throughout his distinguished career, Mr. Sarfaraz Ahmad has received several esteemed awards:
- In 2018, he was honored with the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration for his exemplary work in implementing the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana.
- He also received the Telangana Excellence Award in 2018, further acknowledging his outstanding service.
- His dedication to social programs earned him the National Award for the implementation of the Beti Bachao Beti Padao initiative.
