Telangana has seen a significant surge in dengue cases, with over 4,000 infections reported between April and August this year. These alarming figures come from the most recent data released by the National Centre for Vector Borne Diseases Control (NCVBDC), an entity under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
According to the NCVBDC’s updated website data, valid until August 2025, Telangana has recorded precisely 4,296 dengue cases this year, fortunately without any reported fatalities. This marks a dramatic increase from the mere 267 cases noted in the previous update, which concluded in March.
This sharp rise in infections aligns with the ongoing monsoon season, which usually runs from June to September. This period is notorious for the proliferation of vector-borne and water-borne illnesses like dengue, malaria, chikungunya, typhoid, hepatitis, leptospirosis, and various respiratory infections, largely due to increased mosquito breeding in stagnant water and potential contamination of food and water supplies.
Notably, this crucial national update emerges at a time when the Telangana Health Department has remained silent, having not yet published any official statistics regarding seasonal diseases, including dengue, for the current year.
For context, Telangana reported 4,648 dengue cases during the same period last year (up to August 21, 2024), with the total annual count reaching 10,077 by December. In 2023, the state saw 8,016 cases, underscoring a persistent and substantial challenge posed by the disease.
Furthermore, chikungunya cases are also on the rise. NCVBDC data indicates that Telangana has confirmed 252 chikungunya infections from a total of 7,176 samples tested up to August of this year.
