On Monday, October 6, 2025, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma officially launched the ‘Shraddhanjali’ scheme, a heartfelt initiative designed to bring back the mortal remains of Assamese residents who pass away outside the state. During the launch, Mr. Sarma emphasized that the scheme aims to ensure the dignified return of deceased individuals to their grieving families. This crucial program will be managed by the State’s Home and Political Department, working in close collaboration with the Assam Police.
However, the ‘Shraddhanjali’ scheme is specifically intended for families facing financial hardship. It will not be extended to ‘financially well-off families or those who are capable of making their own arrangements,’ clarified the Chief Minister. Additionally, patients traveling to other states for medical treatment will not be eligible for this particular scheme.
