In a significant development, the Kerala government has taken stringent action, suspending an Assistant Commandant from the Kerala Armed Police (KAP) Battalion. The suspension comes after the officer was found reporting for duty under the influence of alcohol during Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s official visit to the state in August, authorities confirmed on Sunday.
The officer in question, S. Suresh Kumar, was assigned a critical role as officer-in-charge at the Kochi airport terminal, specifically for security arrangements during Minister Shah’s two-day visit, which commenced on August 21.
However, his condition was quickly noticed by senior officers who promptly relieved him of his duties due to visible signs of intoxication.
A subsequent medical examination at a government hospital in Angamaly unequivocally confirmed the presence of alcohol in his system, solidifying the grounds for immediate action by the police department.
Following this serious breach of conduct, the State Police Chief initiated a thorough inquiry, and a detailed report outlining the incident was recently presented to the government.
The government, after reviewing the inquiry’s findings, determined that the officer had committed grave misconduct, leading to his formal suspension.
Furthermore, Mr. Suresh is now mandated to face an oral inquiry, in strict adherence to the Kerala Police Department’s Inquiries, Punishment, and Appeal Rules.
Officials confirmed that a special committee, composed of senior police officers, will soon be constituted to conduct this crucial inquiry and decide on further disciplinary actions.
