A shocking and tragic incident unfolded in Proddatur town, Kadapa district, on Sunday, October 5, 2025. A son stands accused of the brutal murder of his mother, reportedly slitting her throat with a sharp knife. What makes this crime even more chilling is that authorities discovered the son calmly watching television at the scene, displaying an alarming lack of remorse.
The victim has been identified as Uppuluri Lakshmi Devi, wife of Vijayabhaskar Reddy. She worked as a dedicated teacher at a government school in Sriram Nagar colony. Her son, Yashwant Kumar Reddy, a B.Tech graduate from Chennai, had been residing in Hyderabad, actively seeking employment.
Police investigations reveal a disturbing motive: a financial dispute. Lakshmi Devi regularly supported her son financially for his monthly needs. However, she reportedly refused his recent demand for ₹10,000. This refusal appears to have ignited a deep-seated resentment in Yashwant. he traveled from Hyderabad to Proddatur early Sunday morning, immediately confronting his mother in a heated argument.
As the argument escalated, his father, Vijayabhaskar Reddy, attempted to intervene, but Yashwant forcibly locked him in the bedroom. In a horrifying sequence of events, Yashwant then used a vegetable knife to fatally slit his mother’s throat. After dragging her body outside the house, he calmly re-entered, bolted the doors from the inside, and resumed watching television, a stark display of indifference to the tragedy he had just wrought.
Upon arrival at the scene, Proddatur police apprehended Yashwant for questioning. Lakshmi Devi’s body was subsequently sent for a post-mortem examination as part of the ongoing investigation.
