During a focused enforcement drive held by the Cyberabad Traffic Police between September 29 and October 4, an alarming 416 motorists were apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol. This significant number underscores the persistent challenge of drunk driving in the region.
Official statistics reveal that two-wheeler riders constituted the largest group of offenders, with 321 cases. Four-wheelers followed with 80 arrests, while 13 three-wheelers and 2 heavy vehicles were also impounded. Interestingly, the majority of those caught were between 31 and 40 years old (156 cases), with a close second being the 21 to 30 age bracket (151 cases).
Authorities have confirmed that all individuals caught during this operation will be brought before the court. In the same week, 51 drunk driving cases were successfully processed. Of these, 45 individuals received fines, while six were handed jail sentences – four for a single day and two for two days. Furthermore, five offenders were directed to perform social service as part of their judicial penalties.
Traffic officials issued a stern reminder to all motorists: drunk driving is a grave offense under the recently enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. They emphasized that any driver found operating a vehicle under the influence who subsequently causes a fatal accident will face charges under Section 105 for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, a charge that carries a severe penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a substantial fine.
