The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has announced a game-changer for air travelers: the upcoming Blue Line, which connects Central Silk Board Junction to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) via K.R. Puram, will feature dedicated luggage racks in its metro coaches.
This thoughtful design modification addresses the unique needs of airport passengers, ensuring they can travel with larger baggage without inconvenience. A senior BMRCL official confirmed, “This line is specifically designed for airport connectivity, and we want to ensure maximum comfort for passengers with luggage. Racks will be installed at both ends of each coach, replacing two seats, providing a secure and easily accessible space for big suitcases.”
Currently, Bengaluru’s metro system lacks dedicated baggage space, with strict rules permitting only one bag (up to 60cm x 45cm x 25cm and 15kg) free of charge. Larger or additional bags incur a ₹30 fee, and violations can lead to fines up to ₹250. These new racks are expected to alleviate such restrictions, greatly benefiting air passengers who often carry heavy or multiple pieces of luggage.
The Blue Line stands as a pivotal project in Namma Metro’s expansion, promising a direct and efficient link to Bengaluru’s international airport, situated on the city’s northern periphery. This extensive 58.19-km corridor will smoothly connect Silk Board Junction in the south to KIA in the north, passing through K.R. Puram.
The project is divided into two phases: Phase 2A, a 19.75-km stretch from Central Silk Board to K.R. Puram, and Phase 2B, extending 38.44-km from K.R. Puram to the airport. Officials report that the project achieved 52.5% physical completion by June 30, 2025, with the full line anticipated to be operational by December 2027.
Commuters Eagerly Anticipate the Upgrade
Regular airport commuters have long awaited this metro connection, anticipating a faster and more dependable alternative to current road transport options. Lokesh S., a frequent flyer residing in BTM Layout, expressed his enthusiasm: “I’ve been dreaming of a metro line to the airport for years. The decision to integrate luggage racks is incredibly smart. It will be a huge relief for thousands of travelers who currently struggle with their bags on public transport. Even BMTC’s airport buses offer dedicated luggage space, so it’s logical for the metro to follow suit.”
The Blue Line project has been a priority for nearly a decade. Its Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Silk Board–K.R. Puram segment was prepared in October 2016 and received Cabinet approval in March 2017. The DPR for the airport extension was finalized in September 2017 and approved by the government in January 2019. The combined cost for Phases 2A and 2B is estimated at ₹14,788 crore.
Adding to the excitement, BMRCL has also announced that the Blue Line will feature advanced driverless trains, promising enhanced safety and efficiency.
