Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, currently on a four-nation tour of South America, recently expressed his admiration for Indian two-wheeler manufacturers Bajaj, Hero, and TVS for their impressive performance in Colombia. He asserted that their success is a testament to the power of innovation, rather than reliance on political favoritism.
During his visit, Mr. Gandhi shared an image on X, posing proudly in front of a Bajaj Pulsar motorcycle. “Proud to see Bajaj, Hero and TVS do so well in Colombia. Shows Indian companies can win with innovation, not cronyism. Great job,” he stated.
Speaking at a seminar titled ‘The Future is Today’ at EIA University in Medellin, Colombia, Mr. Gandhi also criticized the notion of a select few businesses dominating an entire economy. He elaborated on India’s unique and complex system, distinguishing it from China’s, and emphasized its deep-rooted spiritual traditions and profound thought systems that hold relevance in the modern world.
While expressing optimism about India’s future, the Leader of the Opposition acknowledged inherent “fault lines” and risks within the nation’s structure. He specifically pointed to what he described as “a wholesale attack on the democratic system in India” as the single biggest threat.
Mr. Gandhi stressed that India’s diverse tapestry of religions, traditions, and languages necessitates a democratic environment that provides ample space for varied ideas and expressions. He unequivocally stated that India’s constitutional framework would not tolerate an authoritarian system like that of China, where suppression is prevalent. “Our design will just not accept that,” he concluded.
