Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge underwent a successful pacemaker implantation on October 1 at M. S. Ramaiah Memorial Hospital in Bengaluru. Medical professionals have confirmed his stable condition, with expectations for his discharge either by Thursday evening or Friday morning.
The 84-year-old Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha was admitted to the hospital on September 30 after experiencing breathing discomfort. A thorough medical examination revealed a low heart rate, prompting doctors to recommend the immediate implantation of a pacemaker to stabilize his cardiac function.
“All his other health indicators were normal, apart from the slowed heart rate,” stated hospital authorities. “The pacemaker procedure, planned for October 1, was completed without complications. Mr. Kharge has since been moved from the ICU to a regular room, is in stable condition, and is already up and walking, eagerly awaiting his discharge.”
His son, Priyank Kharge, who serves as Karnataka’s Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, as well as IT-BT, assured the public that the procedure was minor and successful. “He has remained stable post-procedure,” the Minister added.
Set to Resume Duties from October 3
Priyank Kharge further announced that his father is expected to fully resume his official responsibilities and attend all pre-scheduled engagements starting October 3.
In a post on X on October 2, Priyank Kharge shared, “Shri Kharge was advised pacemaker implantation, which he underwent at the hospital. He is stable and recovering well. We are deeply grateful for everyone’s concern and well wishes.”
Speaking to the press on October 1, he clarified that the pacemaker was advised due to age-related issues and occasional breathlessness, primarily to stabilize his heart rate. “There are no other underlying problems. The procedure went well, and everything is stable. There’s no cause for concern,” he emphasized, adding that his father continues to benefit from the blessings and good wishes of the people.
Given his significant role as the Congress President, Mr. Kharge frequently travels across India, shouldering immense responsibilities. His son acknowledged the demanding nature of this role but affirmed his father’s resilience and the unwavering support he receives from well-wishers.
Chief Minister and Prime Minister Extend Good Wishes
On October 1, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited Mr. Kharge at the hospital. “He felt some uneasiness, which led to his hospital visit for a check-up. He is doing fine and will be discharged on Thursday. He is conversing normally and is in good spirits,” Mr. Siddaramaiah informed reporters after his visit.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended his wishes for a swift recovery, speaking with Mr. Mallikarjun Kharge on October 2.
In a message posted on X, Prime Minister Modi stated, “Spoke to Kharge ji. Enquired about his health and wished him a speedy recovery. Praying for his continued well-being and long life.”
