On Tuesday, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray did not mince words, declaring that India’s decision to play a cricket match against Pakistan had exposed the BJP’s ‘farce’ of patriotism. He firmly asserted that the nation should have shown unwavering resolve by boycotting the game entirely.
India’s recent victory against their traditional rivals by seven wickets in the Asia Cup match on Sunday had sparked widespread debate. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) faced significant backlash on social media for allowing the fixture to proceed, especially in the wake of a terror attack in Pahalgam.
Thackeray also took aim at the current Mahayuti government, questioning its financial integrity. He highlighted the staggering debt burden of ₹9 lakh crore and expressed concern over the introduction of new schemes despite the state’s precarious economic condition.
“The BJP’s pretense of patriotism has been laid bare for all to see. India should have demonstrated its strength by outright refusing to play against Pakistan,” Thackeray told reporters.
The Sena (UBT) chief further argued that India’s participation in the match explained the lack of international support received after the Pahalgam terror attack, despite all-party delegations being sent abroad.
“When we brand Pakistan as a perpetrator of terror, the world will inevitably question our actions. Are we their adversary or their ally? If we are truly their enemy, then all ties must be severed,” Thackeray stated emphatically.
The former Chief Minister also lambasted the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction for its perceived support of the BJP amidst the cricket controversy. He accused them of prioritizing their political positions over national interest, stating, “They only love their chair and not the country.”
Addressing the state’s financial woes, Thackeray remarked, “If loans are being acquired merely to benefit contractors and fund the construction of dams, bridges, and roads, then I refuse to call that true development. The priority must be to find ways to alleviate this debt.” He concluded by calling for immediate aid for farmers affected by recent heavy rains.
