Maharashtra’s esteemed Advocate General, Birendra Saraf, has submitted his resignation, citing personal reasons. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed the acceptance of Saraf’s resignation during a recent Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
Despite his resignation, Advocate General Saraf is set to remain in his pivotal position until January 2026. This extended tenure will provide the state government ample time to appoint a suitable successor to the crucial role.
Saraf originally took on the responsibilities of Advocate General in December 2022. During his time in office, he played a significant role in representing the State government across several high-profile cases.
Notable among these were his involvement in the sensitive Maratha reservation issue and the widely publicized Badlapur school sexual assault case.
A seasoned legal professional, Saraf was designated as a senior advocate in February 2020. He brings nearly 25 years of extensive practice in the Bombay High Court, having completed his legal education at the prestigious Government Law College in Mumbai.
