Ladakh’s Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta recently convened a security review meeting in the Union Territory (UT), where he assured the public that restrictions imposed after last week’s violence would be lifted in a phased manner.
For the past week, Mr. Gupta has been holding high-level meetings twice daily—once in the morning and once in the evening. These urgent discussions followed violent clashes on September 24, which tragically resulted in four deaths and numerous injuries. The unrest stemmed from public agitation demanding statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
During these meetings, officials provided the Lieutenant Governor with updates on the latest security scenario and detailed the measures being undertaken to maintain peace and stability throughout the region.
Addressing the gatherings, the Lieutenant Governor highly praised the persistent efforts of the security forces and the civil administration. He acknowledged their crucial role in restoring normalcy under challenging circumstances over the past week. He also expressed deep appreciation for the patience and cooperation demonstrated by the people of Ladakh during this difficult time.
In a review of welfare measures, Mr. Gupta inquired about the condition of those still receiving treatment at the government hospital. He issued directives to the administration and hospital authorities to ensure that all injured individuals receive the best possible medical care. Furthermore, he instructed the Leh Deputy Commissioner to guarantee that the administration provides all necessary humanitarian aid and financial support for cases requiring advanced medical treatment outside the UT, ensuring that no individual faces hardship or feels neglected.
The Lieutenant Governor appealed to all citizens, urging them to disregard rumors or misinformation. He firmly assured them that peace and harmony would be protected at all costs. He emphasized that the administration, in collaboration with security forces, is fully committed to maintaining peace, law, and order across the UT.
Mr. Gupta reiterated his assurance that all precautionary restrictions would soon be lifted gradually once the situation fully stabilizes. He concluded by stating, ‘Peace and development are the top priorities of the administration. Together, with the cooperation of the people, Ladakh will continue on the path of progress.’
