In a somber development following a catastrophic building collapse at the Ennore Thermal Power Station, legal action has been initiated against the contractor responsible. The incident, which occurred on September 30, 2025, led to the tragic loss of nine migrant workers, all hailing from Assam.
Authorities confirmed on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, that a formal case has been registered against the contractor under pertinent legal provisions. A senior official from the Kattur Police Station stated, “Cases have been booked against the contractor. Investigations are actively underway.”
The devastating news prompted expressions of grief from the nation’s top leadership. Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his deep sorrow over the tragedy, while Chief Minister M.K. Stalin also extended his condolences. In a swift response, Chief Minister Stalin directed Electricity Minister S.S. Sivasankar and TANGEDCO Chairman K. Radhakrishnan to immediately supervise the relief efforts at the accident site.
K. Radhakrishnan, Chairman of TANGEDCO, provided further details, explaining that ten individuals were positioned beneath the under-construction building when its structural base gave way, causing them to fall from a height of 45 meters. He confirmed that Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) was responsible for the design, construction, and building work of the project. Tragically, nine of those involved were declared dead upon arrival at Government Royapettah Stanley Hospital, while one person is currently receiving medical treatment.
In a gesture of support for the victims’ families, Prime Minister Modi announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each deceased. Concurrently, Chief Minister Stalin pledged a compensation of ₹10 lakh to the bereaved families.
Political figures across the state also voiced their sorrow. Among them were AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami and Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K. Selvaperunthagai, who expressed profound grief over the incident.
