A remarkable act of generosity has unfolded in Hyderabad, where a 21-year-old, after being declared brain stem dead, became an organ donor, transforming the lives of three people.
The young man, I. Nagendra Kumar from Yousufguda, Hyderabad, was admitted to AIIMS Mangalagiri following a critical medical emergency. He suffered a post-procedural rupture of a vein of Galen malformation, which resulted in an intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), and had previously undergone an external ventricular drain (EVD) placement and a decompressive craniotomy.
Despite every effort by medical professionals, Nagendra’s condition was irreversible, and he was pronounced brain stem dead on September 29. With immense courage and compassion, his parents provided written consent for organ donation, allowing AIIMS Mangalagiri to facilitate its third brain stem dead organ donation.
The impact of his donation was immediate and life-changing. Both of Nagendra’s kidneys were successfully transplanted into two recipients at AIIMS Mangalagiri. His liver was promptly transported to Aster Ramesh Hospitals in Guntur for another critical transplant, while his corneas were carefully preserved at the L.V. Prasad Eye Bank in Vijayawada, offering the gift of sight to those in desperate need.
The medical community, deeply moved by this humanitarian gesture, honored the donor’s family, recognizing their incredible decision that brought extended life and renewed hope to multiple patients.
