Work has commenced on a significant new project at the White House, as crews have started demolishing sections of the East Wing. The objective is to clear the way for a new ballroom, a feature President Donald Trump has long desired.
The demolition, which began on Monday, involves the removal of a substantial covered entryway and windows. President Trump has stated that the East Wing is undergoing a complete modernization. He previously mentioned that the new ballroom, estimated to cost $250 million, would be situated near the existing structure but would not directly alter it, emphasizing respect for the historical building.
In a social media announcement, Trump shared that “ground has been broken” for this “much-needed” addition. He noted that for over 150 years, presidents have envisioned a ballroom at the White House capable of hosting grand parties and state visits. He further clarified that the project is funded entirely by private donations from supporters.
The East Wing, constructed in 1902 and last modified in 1942, is attached to the main White House structure. Observers noted the presence of large construction equipment, some bearing U.S. flags, near the East Wing. The demolition of the covered entryway was visible, with debris and cables exposed.
Onlookers gathered to observe the activity, with some expressing disapproval. One individual, who declined to be identified, voiced her dissatisfaction with the changes, gesturing towards the White House and lamenting the alterations.
