The recent formal recognition of the State of Palestine by the UK, France, Australia, Canada, and several other European nations during the UN General Assembly has been met with a mix of hope and caution. Kamal Daowd, 40, from Ramallah, acknowledges the importance of this step but stresses that without significant international pressure on Israel, it risks becoming mere “ink on paper.”
Israel’s reaction has been sharp, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterating his stance against a Palestinian state. This has been accompanied by calls from far-right coalition members for Israel to annex the West Bank, raising further concerns among Palestinians. As Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich stated, the response to recognition will be “facts of houses, facts of neighborhoods,” signaling a commitment to settlement expansion.
The situation in the West Bank has tightened significantly since the October 7th attacks and the subsequent war in Gaza. New Israeli military checkpoints have become a common sight, extending journey times for Palestinians. The Palestinian Authority faces severe economic strain, with Israel withholding tax revenues, leading to reduced salaries and limited working days for public servants.
Settler violence against Palestinians has also escalated, with numerous new outposts established. The Israeli government’s continued settlement expansion, particularly the E1 project near Jerusalem, which rights groups argue would bisect the West Bank, further dims the prospects for a viable Palestinian state.
The devastation in Gaza is immense, with tens of thousands killed and the majority of the population displaced. Reconstruction is estimated to cost billions over the next decade. Despite the overwhelming challenges, Palestinian leaders like Sabri Saidam of Fatah remain hopeful, believing that continued international engagement, particularly with the US, is crucial for achieving their national aspirations.
However, recent actions, such as the US barring Palestinian officials from the UN General Assembly, suggest that the path to statehood remains fraught with political obstacles. For many Palestinians, the dream of a viable state feels increasingly distant, yet the pursuit of recognition and practical solutions continues.
