Believe it or not, Warner Bros. is actively campaigning for A Minecraft Movie to be recognized at this year’s Academy Awards! The studio has even created a ‘For Your Consideration’ website, highlighting every category they feel the film deserves a nod in.
And we’re not talking about just a few minor mentions. Their ambitious list includes major honors like Best Picture, Best Director for Jared Hess, and a bold claim for Jack Black as Best Actor. Supporting cast members Jason Momoa, Sebastian Hansen, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Jennifer Coolidge are also being championed for Best Supporting Actor/Actress awards.
The studio’s push extends to almost every technical and creative department, urging voters to consider Minecraft for accolades in Best Casting, Cinematography, Film Editing, Production Design, Costume Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, Sound, Visual Effects, Original Score, Original Songs, and Adapted Screenplay.
While Minecraft is certainly a surprising entry, Warner Bros. is also advocating for other titles like Weapons, Superman, Sinners, and Mickey 17 for the upcoming Academy Awards ceremony, scheduled for March 2025. The official nominations will be revealed in January 2026.
It’s common practice for major studios to invest heavily in ‘For Your Consideration’ campaigns to boost their films’ Oscar chances. While A Minecraft Movie might not strike everyone as a traditional awards contender, Warner Bros. clearly sees its potential. These campaigns also cleverly serve as a marketing tool, encouraging repeat viewings and attracting new audiences, especially now that the film is available on streaming and home video.
Despite any skepticism, A Minecraft Movie has already proven its massive appeal, raking in over $950 million worldwide. This impressive haul makes it the second highest-grossing video game adaptation ever and places it at number 69 on the list of all-time highest-grossing films globally.
Looking ahead, a sequel is already planned for 2027, with director Jared Hess set to return. The follow-up might put the spotlight on the character Alex, who made a teasing appearance at the end of the first film, potentially joining forces with Jack Black’s character, Steve, as hinted by Hess.
