Get ready, Tenno! The highly anticipated Warframe expansion, The Old Peace, is shaping up to be an incredible release from developer Digital Extremes. After months of tantalizing teasers for this next chapter in the free-to-play Steam game, the studio has finally pulled back the curtain, giving us our most comprehensive look yet. From an exciting new questline to the surprising ability to romance The Devil’s Triad, there’s a lot to unpack. During Warframe Devstream 190, creative director Rebecca Ford (channeling Hideo Kojima) joined CEO Steve Sinclair, design director Pablo Alonso, community director Megan Everett, and Soulframe lead Geoff Crookes to offer a thrilling glimpse into the future.
The two main pillars of Warframe: The Old Peace are its namesake quest, which explores the mysterious Tau System, and The Devil’s Triad, which is the star of today’s reveal. This intriguing trio consists of three Protoframes for Harrow, Wisp, and Uriel, and will also introduce the formidable ‘Devil Warframe’ itself. Ford hinted at a changed world following the new questline, suggesting that “The Old Peace changes things. It creates meaning and differences in the world you knew.”
Players will journey to the Sanctum Anatomica to help mend this squad, which has been “broken” by Warframe’s infamous scientist, Entrati. “The bidding that he has for this group will be yours to discover,” Ford explained. All three Protoframe designs look absolutely stunning, with Wisp’s ‘Marie Leroux’ design poised to be a fan favorite. “You can make a baddie goth nun, whatever you like,” Ford playfully teased while showcasing the extensive color customization options. Roathe also earns special mention, voiced by the talented René Zagger, known for his unflappable presence as FF14’s Emet-Selch.
Excitingly, all three characters—Lyon, Marie, and Roathe—will be romanceable! This new romance system operates differently from the Hex progression in 1999. Since it’s set in a separate era, dating one of The Devil’s Triad members won’t affect your existing relationships. While they won’t move into your Orbiter, you can take your chosen partner on dates across the world. During these dates, you’ll uncover their thoughts on the current state of affairs and other key narrative figures, and even capture some memorable photos. Ford mentioned that this feature might be brought to 1999 if it proves popular, and reassuringly confirmed, “Of course there’s kissing.”
Another major highlight is the Uriel Warframe, bringing the total count to a whopping 63! While a full gameplay breakdown is still to come, we did get a sneak peek (around the 43:20 mark). Uriel enters battle accompanied by three allies and can activate a “mode of balefire and brimstone,” allowing him to continuously spin through the skies with his bullet jump. Described as “a blaze, a meteor of fire,” he can seamlessly enter and exit this mode to hover in the air and deploy other abilities.
The highly anticipated Operator and Drifter rework promises dramatic enhancements to your player character’s customization. These changes represent a significant leap forward, with the new hair options, in particular, being a standout improvement. Head to the 50-minute mark in the devstream to witness it yourself and start envisioning your fresh new look!
Finally, the showcase introduced The Descendia, a colossal tower challenging players to conquer 21 floors. Additional characters will join your fight at seven-stage intervals. This weekly event includes checkpoints, so you don’t have to complete the entire progression in one go. With abundant rewards, The Descendia is set to become a compelling reason to return regularly. To conclude the presentation, the team announced that Gyre Prime will be the next special upgrade, arriving alongside The Old Peace.
The Warframe: The Old Peace release date is scheduled for December 2025. Expect another, more in-depth look at the expansion during a devstream later in November. After today’s revelations, many players will surely be eager to jump back in and prepare.
