In a landmark decision, the Uttar Pradesh government has greenlit a substantial increase in medical education opportunities for the upcoming 2025-26 academic session. This initiative will see the addition of 950 new MBBS seats and 271 postgraduate (PG) seats across various government and private medical colleges throughout the state. Government colleges alone will gain 200 MBBS and 233 PG seats, while private institutions are set to add 750 MBBS and 38 PG seats. This expansion will elevate the total MBBS seats to 12,800 and total PG seats to 4,297, aiming to strengthen healthcare infrastructure, enhance medical education capacity, and address doctor shortages across urban and rural areas in the state.

This significant expansion is a key part of Uttar Pradesh’s ongoing commitment to bolster its healthcare infrastructure and create more pathways for aspiring medical professionals. The new seats are strategically introduced to help bridge the existing gap in medical personnel and improve healthcare service delivery in both urban and rural communities.
Government and Private Colleges See Increase in Seats
A substantial portion of the MBBS seats will be added to private medical colleges, with 750 seats being allocated across 12 private institutions. In addition, 200 new MBBS seats will be introduced in three government-run medical colleges. Notably, the Autonomous State Medical College in Amethi will gain 100 seats, while the ESIC Medical Colleges in Noida and Varanasi will each receive 50 additional seats.
As a result, the total number of MBBS seats in Uttar Pradesh will reach nearly 12,800 for the upcoming academic year, with 5,450 in government colleges and 7,350 in private colleges.
Postgraduate Seats Also Expanded
The expansion is not limited to undergraduate courses. The state has also approved 271 additional MD and MS seats. Out of these, 233 seats will be in government colleges, while 38 seats will be offered at Narayan Medical College in Kanpur, a private institution.
This will bring the total number of PG seats in Uttar Pradesh to 2,137 in government colleges and 2,160 in private colleges. The increase in PG seats is expected to provide greater opportunities for postgraduate medical education and improve the state’s capacity to meet the growing demand for specialists.
Expansion Strengthens Healthcare Infrastructure
The addition of new MBBS and PG seats is expected to play a key role in enhancing healthcare delivery in Uttar Pradesh. By expanding medical education opportunities, the state aims to increase the number of qualified doctors, addressing shortages and improving overall healthcare services.
The move reflects the government’s long-term strategy to ensure that medical education is accessible to a wider pool of students, with a particular focus on rural and underserved areas.
This expansion marks a significant milestone in Uttar Pradesh’s continuous efforts to boost medical education and enhance healthcare capacity across the state.
