A Trip Down Gaming Memory Lane 🎂

In a fun bit of retro news, we’re celebrating the 38th birthday of the legendary Sega Master System. I vividly remember convincing my parents to get me one of these when it came bundled with two controllers, a light phaser, and iconic games like Hang On and Safari Hunt. Despite its humble 8-bit origins, the Master System had a surprisingly strong market presence here in Australia, even outperforming its rival, the NES, in some ways (though not in bigger markets like Japan or North America). Want to relive that classic Master System feel today, affordably and authentically? Grab the modern remaster of Alex Kidd in Miracle World—everyone who had a Master System owned that one!

Here are some other notable Aussie gaming anniversaries:

  • Sega Master System launched in 1987.
  • Amiga CD32 launched in 1993.
  • Star Trek: Starfleet Command (PC) released in 1999.
  • Psi-Ops: Mindgate Conspiracy (PS2, XB) released in 2004.
  • PSP Go launched in 2009.

Score Big on Nintendo Switch

When it comes to the Switch, I have amazing memories of Pokémon Legends: Arceus. This game truly broke new ground with its semi-open areas and a monster-catching experience that felt more alive and dynamic than anything the series had achieved before. And, of course, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is still a go-to party game at my place – it’s the only title where you can genuinely see Solid Snake battling it out with Pikachu!

Pokémon Legends: Arceus screenshot

  • Pokémon Legends: Arceus (-20%) – A$64: This is where Pokémon truly unleashed its potential, offering a semi-open world. It might have a few rough edges, but the thrill of hunting shiny Pokémon in the wild is truly unmatched.
  • Super Smash Bros. Ult. (-18%) – A$74: The ultimate party starter for the Switch! Get ready for endless fighters, pure chaos, and a soundtrack that will bring tears of nostalgia to your eyes.
  • Zelda: Link’s Awakening (-13%) – A$69.90: A brilliant example of how a 1993 classic can be perfectly reimagined. It’s short, sweet, and wonderfully quirky.
  • Dragon Ball Fighterz (-46%) – A$49: Experience the closest thing to screaming “KAMEHAMEHA” at your friends without risking your friendships. Expect slick visuals, stylish combat, and anime-accurate mayhem.
  • Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled (-34%) – A$45.90: If you find Mario Kart a bit too friendly, this is your game. It features tougher tracks, brutal shortcuts, and plenty of “who just bombed me?!” moments.

Amazing Xbox Deals Await

On the Xbox Series X, Mafia: The Old Country truly impressed me with its incredibly detailed period setting and gritty storytelling. The developers even went as far as studying 1930s radio broadcasts for authenticity! And Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove remains an indie gem I frequently revisit, thanks to its perfectly crafted retro platforming and a steady stream of free expansions.

Mafia: The Old Country screenshot

  • Mafia: The Old Country (-23%) – A$69: This mobster narrative feels less like “Scarface” and more like a gripping, slow-burn HBO drama. Expect sharp suits, cigars, and plenty of intense brooding.
  • Dying Light 2: Stay Human (-81%) – A$19: Combining exhilarating parkour, hordes of zombies, and more rooftop cardio than a CrossFit class. The story might be a bit shaky, but the price is incredibly low.
  • Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove (-53%) – A$27: The indie icon that refuses to fade! This bundle includes all expansions, so you’ll be drowning in fantastic retro-inspired gameplay.
  • Scarlet Nexus (-78%) – A$20.70: Prepare for wild anime hair, powerful psychic abilities, and enemies that look like furniture brought to life. It’s wonderfully insane.
  • Gotham Knights (-83%) – A$19: With Batman gone, it’s time for the sidekicks to step up. It’s a bit rough around the edges, but can be fun with friends (just manage your expectations!).

Xbox One Deals

  • Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 (-59%) – A$28.60: Kickflips, grinds, and Superman pumping through the speakers! If you played it in 2000, your thumbs already know the moves.
  • Assassin’s Creed Origins (-67%) – A$33.40: Ancient Egypt looks breathtaking, the combat feels fresh, and you even get to control an eagle. Sorry pigeons, your time is over.
  • The Quarry (-85%) – A$15: A horror movie where you control the outcome. Everyone can live, everyone can die. Perfect for a Friday night horror session with popcorn.

Fantastic PlayStation Savings

I absolutely immersed myself in Dragon’s Dogma 2 on PS5 for hours. A huge part of that was the pawn system, which offers surprisingly capable AI companions. Another highlight is Tales of Arise, with its combat system that beautifully combines frantic combos with stunning anime visuals, making every fight feel epic.

Dragon's Dogma 2 screenshot

  • Dragon’s Dogma 2 (-37%) – A$67.80: Prepare for colossal monsters, dark dungeons, and AI companions who will endlessly shout “Wolves hunt in packs!” It’s easily Capcom’s most peculiar RPG, and that’s saying something.
  • Armored Core 7 (-65%) – A$34.90: From the creators of Elden Ring, but instead of swords, you pilot a mech armed with enough firepower for a small army. It’s much faster than you’d expect.
  • Octopath Traveler II (-36%) – A$54.40: Boasting charming retro RPG aesthetics, beautiful pixel art, and a cast of characters who all believe their story is the main one. (Spoiler: some are more engaging than others!)
  • Silent Hill f (-16%) – A$109: A horrifying floral nightmare straight from Japan. It looks spooky, sounds spooky, and is undoubtedly spooky. Silent Hill’s unique weirdness is cranked to eleven here.
  • Tales of Arise (-68%) – A$32.20: Expect gorgeous anime-style swordplay, delightful party banter, and combat that feels more like an action game. It’s the perfect comfort food for JRPG fans.

PS4 Deals

  • Elden Ring (-51%) – A$49: Imagine Dark Souls, but with a trusty steed and an expansive open world. Plus, more bosses than you’ll ever care to count. Who knew pain could feel so good?
  • Persona 5 Royal (-46%) – A$54.40: Stylish teenagers battling demons while trying to ace their exams. Honestly, it’s more stressful than actual high school!
  • Far Cry 5 (-66%) – A$34.10: Resolve Montana’s cult crisis with a mix of explosions, fishing rods, and a loyal dog named Boomer. Subtlety is definitely not on the menu here.

Incredible PC Gaming Discounts

On the PC front, DOOM Eternal remains one of the most intense shooters available. Its rhythmic combat loop is perfectly synced with heavy metal tracks specifically composed for its brutal glory kills. Meanwhile, Hades brilliantly transformed death into a form of progression, making me happily grind through runs just to enjoy more of its witty, godly banter.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 screenshot

  • Space Marine 2 (-50%) – A$44.90: Get ready for chainswords, bolters, and a protagonist who screams at everything in sight. Warhammer has never looked this aggressively awesome.
  • Doom Eternal (-90%) – A$5.40: Rip, tear, and repeat. Story? Who needs it when you’re basically a playable heavy metal album cover.
  • Hades (-75%) – A$9.10: Die, flirt with mythological gods, die again. Repeat until you’re completely hooked. This is indie game perfection.
  • Persona 5 Royal (-65%) – A$33.20: The same incredibly stylish RPG experience, but now you can minimize the game to procrastinate during virtual classes.
  • Hogwarts Legacy: Del. Ed. (-82%) – A$17.90: “Accio open-world RPG!” It might be a divisive title, but you can finally live out your dreams of being the Hufflepuff menace you always wanted to be.
