Having owned this box set for years, I can confirm its exceptional quality. The comic strips are printed on thick art paper, and the bindings have remained sturdy. Be warned, though: the premium materials make these books quite heavy. With all three books in the slipcase, you’re looking at 22 pounds of comic strips, with each book weighing approximately 7.3 pounds.

The paperback version contains 1,456 pages, spread across four volumes instead of three. Calvin and Hobbes is generally recommended for kids aged 10 and up, which is understandable in some ways. Many longtime fans, myself included, started reading it as early as kindergarten. It’s not so much the content being inappropriate for young readers, but rather that much of its brilliance lies in its wit and social commentary, which might go over the heads of younger audiences. I certainly gained a much deeper appreciation for Calvin and Hobbes when I revisited it as an adult.
Adult fans of Calvin and Hobbes might also consider Bill Watterson’s latest work, The Mysteries, with its hardcover currently priced at just $7.63 on Amazon. The Mysteries is a stark contrast to Calvin and Hobbes but offers an intriguing illustrated fable for mature readers.
