Q&A with Marty Bennett, Director of International Recruitment & Engagement at The University of Akron
Q1. Could you outline the admission requirements for international applicants at the University of Akron?
A1. The process for undergraduate applicants is straightforward: we require mark sheets from the student’s secondary school for grades 9, 10, and 11, along with Standard X board results (if applying before completing 12th standard boards). Additionally, students need to provide either an English proficiency test score (TOEFL-71, IELTS-6.0, Pearson PTE-48, LanguageCert Academic-65, Duolingo English Test-95) or a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter from their school’s registrar, confirming that English is the language of instruction at the school.
For post-graduate applicants, in addition to transcripts from their bachelor’s degree institution(s) and an English proficiency test score (or MOI from their university registrar), students must submit a Statement of Purpose (SOP) and 2-3 letters of recommendation. We proudly do not charge an application fee for international students, nor do we require standardized academic tests like SAT/ACT for undergraduates or GRE/GMAT for post-graduates. We operate on rolling admissions, making decisions throughout the year to accommodate applicants.
Q2. What are the estimated costs for international students, and what scholarship or financial aid opportunities are available?
A2. Undergraduate applicants are automatically considered for merit scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 per year at the time of admission. Those who receive the highest-level scholarship are also encouraged to apply to the Honors College, which can provide an additional $2,500 per year in scholarships, supplementing their automatic merit awards. The approximate total annual costs (including tuition, fees, living expenses, health insurance, personal expenses, and books/supplies) for the 2026-27 academic year are estimated to be $40,000+.
For post-graduate applicants, financial aid is primarily offered at the departmental level, with graduate assistantships being the most common form of assistance. These assistantships typically cover tuition and provide a stipend for up to 20 hours of work per week within the department. The approximate total annual costs for post-graduate students for the 2026-27 academic year are estimated to be $36,000+.
Q3. Which programs or degrees at The University of Akron are internationally renowned?
A3. Our Polymer Science and Plastics Engineering program holds the #1 global ranking (according to EduRank 2025). Beyond our extensive range of STEM-certified engineering and computer science degrees (which include cybersecurity and networking), our AACSB double-accredited College of Business offers diverse programs. These include an undergraduate Sport Analytics degree and four STEM master’s degrees, featuring a management degree with highly sought-after data analytics and supply chain specializations.
Q4. What support services does UA offer to help international students adjust, such as orientation, academic advising, or immigration assistance?
A4. Our dedicated International Center offers comprehensive, full-lifecycle support for international students. This includes assistance with the post-admission/I-20 request process, thorough pre-arrival training, a welcoming orientation, and continuous immigration support for travel and work permissions via CPT/OPT (curricular or optional practical training). We also provide guidance on health insurance and organize cultural and social programming throughout the academic year, ensuring students feel supported from their arrival all the way through to graduation.
Q5. What opportunities exist for international students regarding internships, research, and career placement during or after their studies?
A5. An impressive 89% of all UA students engage in some form of experiential learning prior to graduation, including internships, clinicals, study abroad programs, and co-op experiences. For instance, all undergraduate engineering students are required to complete three co-op rotations of full-time work, through which they earn an average of $45,000 for a year of full-time employment. Furthermore, 94% of our graduates are successfully employed in their academic fields or have pursued further education at the next degree level, highlighting our strong commitment to career readiness and success.
