Mercedes-Benz India has officially unveiled the highly anticipated G450d SUV, completing the G-Class lineup in the country, which now spans all-electric, petrol, and diesel variants. This latest iteration arrives in India as a Completely Built Unit (CBU), carrying an ex-showroom price of ₹2.9 crores (before options). Enthusiasts should note that the initial allocation of G-Class diesel models is limited to just 50 units, so those interested are encouraged to reach out to their nearest dealership promptly for availability and booking details.
Visually, the G450d proudly maintains the timeless and commanding silhouette that G-Class aficionados adore, much like its G400d predecessor. However, Mercedes has integrated several subtle yet impactful visual and functional upgrades. The front grille now boasts four elegant chrome-finished horizontal slats, complemented by striking new 20-inch AMG alloy wheels. The front and rear bumpers have also received a gentle rework, contributing to a fresher, more refined aesthetic that perfectly balances rugged charm with sophisticated appeal.
Step inside, and the cabin continues to impress with its familiar, luxurious layout. Dominating the dashboard are twin 12.3-inch display screens, seamlessly integrating a digital instrument cluster and a state-of-the-art infotainment unit powered by the latest MBUX NTG7 interface. This intelligent system doesn’t just offer connectivity; it also features augmented reality navigation and an innovative “transparent bonnet” view, making challenging off-road excursions remarkably easier. Premium touches abound, including sumptuous Nappa leather upholstery, customizable ambient lighting to set the mood, and an immersive 760-watt, 18-speaker Burmester audio system with Dolby Atmos support for an unparalleled acoustic experience. For enhanced safety and convenience, the G450d is equipped with a comprehensive Level 2 ADAS package, featuring active brake assist, lane-keeping assist, and a 360-degree surround camera system as standard.
Under the hood, the new Mercedes-Benz G450d truly distinguishes itself, offering a significant performance leap over the earlier G350d and G400d models. It houses a robust 3.0-litre, six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, now churning out an impressive 367hp (a 37hp increase over the G400d) and a massive 750Nm of torque, an additional 50Nm of pulling power. This powerful engine is seamlessly integrated with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, capable of providing an extra 20hp boost when maximum performance is required. Power delivery to all four wheels is managed by a smooth and responsive 9-speed automatic transmission.
Performance figures for the G450d are equally compelling. Mercedes-Benz states that the SUV can rocket from 0 to 100 kph in a mere 5.8 seconds, with its top speed electronically limited to 210 kph. Off-road prowess is a hallmark of the G-Class, and the G450d lives up to the reputation with 241mm of ground clearance between the axles and an impressive ability to wade through water up to 700mm deep. Its approach, breakover, and departure angles are rated at 31°, 26°, and 30° respectively, ensuring composed handling even on extreme side inclines of up to 35°.
Commenting on this significant launch, Santosh Iyer, Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, emphasized, "The new G450d underscores our commitment to providing diesel, petrol, and electric powertrains for the G-Class for the first time in India. This move makes the G-Class, the automotive industry’s longest-running nameplate, more versatile than ever. The G450d, with Mercedes-Benz’s powerful and efficient diesel engine, masterfully combines performance with efficiency, reflecting the strong and sustained customer demand for a diesel option in the G-Class. With the G450d, Mercedes-Benz now offers a ‘G-Class’ to meet every customer’s specific requirements in India, further enhancing the practicality, desirability, and legendary cult status of this iconic SUV."
