Denmark’s Armed Forces have confirmed new sightings of unidentified drones near several military installations overnight. This adds to a growing list of unsettling incursions observed this week near both military sites and critical civilian infrastructure across the nation.
A spokesperson for the Danish Defence stated that drones were observed at multiple locations, prompting the deployment of various defensive measures. Local police specifically noted drone activity around the Karup air base in western Denmark, as reported by the Ritzau News agency.
Neighboring Norway is also facing similar challenges. Police there are actively investigating potential drone sightings near the Oerland air force base, which serves as a crucial hub for Norway’s F-35 jet fighters. Guards at the base reported multiple observations just outside its perimeter early on Saturday.
Earlier in the week, Copenhagen Airport, the busiest in the Nordic region, was forced to close for several hours following the appearance of large drones in its airspace. Five other smaller airports, both civilian and military, also experienced temporary shutdowns due to these incidents.
Danish authorities have unequivocally described these persistent incursions as ‘hybrid attacks.’ Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen previously emphasized the gravity of the situation, calling it ‘the most serious attack on Danish critical infrastructure to date.’
