Prepare to be charmed! The highly anticipated live-action film adaptation of Naho Kaminura and Pukupuku’s beloved slice-of-life manga, ‘Zakken!’, has just unveiled its captivating main trailer. Fans can look forward to its release in Japan on **April 3, 2026**.
The trailer offers a glimpse into the film’s heartwarming world and introduces its beautiful theme song, ‘Zassou Zukan’ (which translates to ‘Weed Encyclopedia’). This poignant track is performed by the talented 19-year-old singer-songwriter, Yuzu Minato.
Minato, originally from Hokkaido, started her artistic journey early, learning singing, dancing, and acting from a young age, inspired by her older sister. She picked up an acoustic guitar at 14 and began writing her own songs at 15, performing at live venues in Sapporo. Upon graduating high school in April 2025, she relocated to Tokyo to further her career.
Expressing her excitement for her involvement, Minato shared, ‘I’m truly delighted to be part of this work, which evokes a faint tingling sensation and bittersweetness, gently melting the heart.’ She added a hopeful message, ‘I also wish that everyone who encounters this work may find their lives overflowing with weeds (treasures) and bursting with life.’ This sentiment beautifully echoes the film’s central theme.
The original ‘Zakken!’ manga, created by Naho Kaminura (story) and Pukupuku (arts), captivated readers on Shogakukan’s Manga One and Ura Sunday websites before concluding in April 2023 with four collected volumes. Notably, Naho Kaminura, a seasoned film creator since 2006, takes the helm as director, adapting her own screenplay for the film.
The title ‘Zakken’ is a charming abbreviation of ‘Zassou Kenkyu-bu,’ meaning ‘Weed Research Club’ in Japanese. Interestingly, a club with the very same name exists at Tokyo Metropolitan Hibiya High School, adding a layer of charming realism to the narrative.
The story follows Yukari, played by Runa Nakashima, a freshman who considers herself a ‘youth misfit’ because she hasn’t yet discovered a passion. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she meets her classmate Mimi, affectionately nicknamed ‘Dokudami-chan,’ portrayed by Miyu Oshima, a passionate weed enthusiast. Together, Dokudami-chan and Yukari embark on a mission to revive their school’s dormant ‘Weed Research Club,’ promising a tale of discovery, friendship, and finding hidden treasures in unexpected places.
