The sudden demise of renowned singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore on September 2025 has left his family reeling, with his wife, Garima Saikia Garg, and sister, Palme Borthakur, demanding a transparent investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding his death. They are united in their plea for justice for the beloved artist.
In a heartbreaking post on her Facebook page, Ms. Garima expressed her profound grief and desperate need for answers. “We will be together again, very soon Goldie,” she wrote, referring to Zubeen by his family nickname. “But now, very soon, I/we all want to know the reason why you went away physically from us… Why? This is a big question. This question is burning my empty heart day and night. I want an answer…”
Echoing her sister-in-law’s sentiments, Palme Borthakur shared her own poignant message on social media. “You will again call me ‘Momon’ when we meet on the other side,” she wrote, emphasizing their shared resolve. “Now we have only one goal… to ensure justice for you.” She also called upon the public for emotional support and assistance in their quest for truth.
Further intensifying the family’s push for transparency, Zubeen’s wife, on October 4, 2025, returned the second post-mortem examination report to the government. This examination had been conducted at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. She stated that the report was not her “personal document” and that investigators were best positioned to determine if it should be made public.
In response, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma clarified on Monday, October 6, 2025, that the government is legally unable to release the post-mortem report publicly. He noted that a certified copy could, however, be obtained through the proper court channels.
Several individuals, including Zubeen’s manager Siddhartha Sharma, musician Shekharjyoti Goswami, singer Amritprava Mahanta, and North East India Festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, have been arrested in connection with the ongoing investigation into the singer’s demise.
The seriousness of the situation is underscored by the filing of over 60 First Information Reports (FIRs) across the state against Mahanta, Sharma, and others. Consequently, Chief Minister Sarma instructed the Director General of Police (DGP) to consolidate all cases and transfer them to the CID for a comprehensive investigation. A Special Investigation Team (SIT), headed by Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta, has been formed to delve into the singer’s death, which occurred on September 19, 2025, while he was swimming in the sea in Singapore.
The SIT has already issued summons to numerous individuals connected to Zubeen Garg, notably including eight of the eleven members of the Assam Association of Singapore who were present with the singer during his final moments on a yacht. These individuals were mandated to appear before the SIT by October 6, 2025.
However, as the October 6, 2025, deadline passed, none of the summoned members from the association had reported to the SIT. Only one individual, Rupkamal Kalita, notified the CID of his intention to appear on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
