Russia’s state nuclear energy company, Rosenergoatom, announced on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, that a Ukrainian drone had attempted to target a nuclear facility in Russia’s Voronezh region, which shares a border with Ukraine.
According to Rosenergoatom, the drone was “suppressed by technical means” before it ultimately detonated after crashing into a cooling tower at the Novovoronezh plant. Fortunately, the incident resulted in no damage to the plant and no injuries. While the detonation left a dark mark on the cooling tower, the company assured that the nuclear power plant’s safe operation remains unaffected, with radiation levels confirmed as normal and stable.
Ukraine has not yet issued any immediate response regarding the alleged incident, which Rosenergoatom has characterized as “another act of aggression by the Ukrainian armed forces against Russian nuclear power plants.”
This is not the first time such accusations have been made. Moscow has previously claimed that Kyiv has launched attacks against nuclear power stations located in Russia’s Kursk and Smolensk regions in the western part of the country. Conversely, Ukraine has accused Russia of intentionally endangering nuclear power stations situated on Ukrainian territory, highlighting the escalating risks associated with the conflict around critical infrastructure.
