Donald Trump has indicated his interest in enlisting China’s help to end the war in Ukraine. Speaking on board Air Force One, the former US President shared his hope that President Xi Jinping could influence Russian President Vladimir Putin to de-escalate the conflict.
This initiative comes at a challenging time for Ukraine, which has recently faced setbacks including a refusal of crucial missile supplies and stalled EU financial aid. The ongoing conflict has seen further casualties and damage, underscoring the urgency for a resolution.
Trump, who has made resolving the conflict a key focus of his foreign policy efforts, has previously spoken about his conversations with Putin. However, these discussions have yet to lead to a breakthrough. The US has also imposed new sanctions on Russia’s major oil companies, though the Kremlin has stated it remains unaffected.
While Trump’s upcoming meeting with Xi is also expected to address trade relations, the former President stated his intention to discuss the Ukraine war with the Chinese leader. Trump believes Xi has significant leverage over Putin and is optimistic that China desires a peaceful conclusion to the hostilities.
China, a key ally of Russia, has maintained a neutral stance publicly, refraining from condemning Russia’s actions in Ukraine. However, concerns have been raised by the US and its allies regarding China’s economic support for Russia, particularly through oil purchases and the supply of dual-use materials. Despite this, China maintains it is not aiding Russia’s war efforts.
The close relationship between Russia and China was recently highlighted during a meeting between Putin, Xi, and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, showcasing a united front. Russia continues to rely on China for economic support, especially as Western sanctions impact its revenue streams.
Amidst these diplomatic discussions, Ukraine continues to face military action. Recent Russian strikes, including in Kyiv, have resulted in casualties and significant damage, prompting President Zelensky to call for continued and enhanced support from international allies.
