True Whitaker, known for her role in ‘Godfather of Harlem’ alongside her father Forest Whitaker and soon to be seen in ‘Spring Breakers 2: Salvation Mountain,’ found an unexpected source of comfort while filming her latest HBO comedy, ‘I Love LA.’ During moments of anxiety on set—understandably, as it’s one of her biggest roles yet—she would instinctively reach for the rosary worn by her character.
Reflecting on this habit, True humorously referenced a popular meme, saying, ‘It reminds me of this one meme where it’s like, ‘You say you’re gangster, but I saw you get nervous and touch your necklace for support.’ That is absolutely me.’
Beyond the set, these sacred pieces of jewelry hold deep emotional significance for the 27-year-old actress. They are powerful reminders of her late mother, Keisha Nash Whitaker, an accomplished actress, producer, and model who passed away in 2023 when True was just 25. Her mother had a cherished collection of rosaries and crosses, often sharing them with her daughter. In an edited and condensed interview, True shared the story of one particularly beloved necklace and the profound sense of connection it brings her.
Tell me about your cross necklace.
This particular cross necklace belonged to my mom for many years. She even wore it to her 30th birthday celebration. Looking through old photos, I see her wearing it around my current age. After she passed, finding this necklace meant the world to me. Wearing it now truly makes me feel connected to her presence.
My mother was raised Catholic, and she had a wonderful collection of crosses. She also had many beautiful vintage Dolce rosaries, which I’ve proudly inherited and cherish.
Any stories about it?
This necklace seems to have a life of its own! Sometimes, it’ll mysteriously fall off, but then, without fail, it always reappears. I always manage to find it, always end up with it again. Knock on wood! I honestly don’t know what I’d do if I ever truly lost it; I’d be heartbroken.
How does it tie into your everyday personal style?
Similar to my mother, I have a soft spot for beautiful rosaries. While I’m not overly religious, I appreciate the symbolism and cultural significance behind them. I especially love wearing a rosary subtly tucked under a shirt. In ‘I Love LA,’ my character wears a rosary that often peeks out from beneath a crop top. It’s a bit daring given it’s a rosary, but I find it really works with the look.
What does it feel like to wear this necklace?
With the cross resting on my chest, it feels incredibly close to my heart. It’s a constant reminder that connects me to my mom. When people ask about it, the first thing I always share is that it belonged to her, and I love showing them pictures of her wearing it. There’s something special about holding onto jewelry from a loved one who has passed; it feels like their energy is even more present. Wearing this, I definitely feel an added layer of protection.
