When a popular gaming device like the Steam Deck captures the hearts of millions, you know creative minds will get to work. Beyond official accessories, an impressive community of tinkerers often develops ingenious solutions. Case in point: a phenomenal dual-screen Steam Deck modification that delivers a Nintendo DS-like experience for a surprisingly low cost.
While countless accessories enhance Valve’s innovative handheld, a truly custom, dual-screen add-on has remained elusive – until now. A clever Redditor has stepped up, crafting a remarkably sleek, compact, and budget-friendly solution that transforms the Steam Deck into a dual-screen powerhouse.
The mastermind behind this creation is Redditor Amoux_fang, who shared incredible images of their project on the r/SteamDeck subreddit. They perfectly demonstrated its potential by showcasing an emulated version of Pokémon Black and White, highlighting the authentic dual-screen feel.
The ingenuity of this modification lies in its simplicity: it requires no permanent alterations to the Steam Deck itself. The setup leverages a clever clip-on accessory, a Deckmate grip, which serves as a universal mounting point for various peripherals, including kickstands and VESA mounts. This particular grip is available for approximately $20.
Amoux_fang then paired this grip with a compatible phone mount, typically priced around $25. This combination creates an ideal and secure platform to attach an additional screen.
For the secondary display, a 7-inch, 1080p portable monitor from Wisecoco was chosen. This screen, which costs around $80, conveniently connects to and draws power from the Steam Deck using a single USB-C cable. Based on the creator’s images, it performs exceptionally well and integrates seamlessly with the overall design.
While this dual-screen setup might not be the most streamlined for on-the-go portability (a dedicated Steam Deck case is often a better travel partner), it’s far more practical than some other creative but bulky solutions, such as attaching a full laptop screen to an airplane seat tray.
