A heartbreaking catastrophe struck Ethiopia’s Amhara region on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, when a church still under construction suddenly collapsed, claiming the lives of at least 25 people.
The devastating incident occurred early in the morning at the Menjar Shenkora Arerti Mariam Church, located in northern Ethiopia. Worshippers had gathered at the site for an annual celebration honoring St. Mary when the structure gave way.
According to Seyoum Altaye, a clinician from a nearby hospital, the victims include both children and elderly individuals. “We have tragically confirmed 25 fatalities and more than a hundred injuries so far,” Altaye stated, emphasizing the urgent need for support from organizations like the Red Cross to care for the wounded.
Local administrator Teshale Tilahun expressed deep sorrow over the event, warning that the death toll could sadly continue to rise. “This represents a profound and tragic loss for our community,” he remarked.
