A horrific incident has shaken the small town of Leland, Mississippi, where four individuals lost their lives and twelve others sustained injuries in a mass shooting. The tragic event occurred around midnight, casting a dark shadow over the community’s homecoming celebrations.
Mayor John Lee of Leland confirmed the casualties, stating that four of the injured were critically wounded and transported to hospitals via airlift. Law enforcement is actively pursuing leads and has initiated a manhunt for the perpetrator(s).
The shooting took place on the town’s main street, not on the high school campus itself, despite Leland High School hosting its homecoming football game on Friday. This annual tradition, meant to foster school spirit and community connection, was tragically marred by the violence.
Mayor Lee expressed the town’s devastation, noting Leland’s typically low crime rate and close-knit community of approximately 3,700 residents. “We all get along, and everybody knows everybody,” he said. “So this is definitely a tragedy to us.”
Adding to the somber news, a separate fatal shooting occurred on the same Friday night in Heidelberg, Mississippi, roughly 200 miles southeast of Leland. This incident, also during a homecoming weekend, resulted in two fatalities, according to local police.
Authorities have indicated that there is no known connection between the two separate shooting incidents.
